All music (yes, all) is of the Lord. However, there are some songs that reverberate higher and are more uplifting then others. Here is a quick and dirty list, which if you "truly" count is more than 27. Don't get bogged in the details! And please note: These songs are not in order of greatness, to me they are all great. Song titles may not all be correct either. Remember it is MY list to share with you. Enjoy.
- This Kiss. Remember Practical Magic? Remember when Sandra Bullock stirred the coffee? One of the best romantic movies of all time, the songs in the movie and specifically this one makes you feel good.
- I Just Want To Be Your Everything -Andy Gibb. He died so young, but this song lives on. Touching and melancholy, there is strength in his singing that makes that still resonates.
- Flashdance - Irene Cara. Don't you just miss Irene Cara? All of her music actually was fun and inspiring, she is a joy to listen to. This song makes you want to get up and dance. Remember the scene at the end of Flashdance? I never watched the movie, but who hasn't enjoyed the famous dance scene??
- Say Something - Mariah Carey. Yes, it is a bit obscure, but I am a Mariah fan. This laid back song is just the thing you need, on a warm summer day.
- Runaway- Janet Jackson. In a long list of great songs by Janet, it was hard to pick just one. This is one of her most playful.
- Get Up - Mary Mary. Inspiring, fun, uplifting. Mary Mary continue to make great music that can reach anyone. Isn't that what its all about?
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGvVj9HMLKs] - Walking on Sunshine performed by Katrina and the Waves. Usually, there is nothing better than the original and this is the case with this 80s(?) pop classic. The lead's voice has a strong tough sound that pretty much forces you to believe "its time to feel good".
- 1999 and When Doves Cry. OK pretty much the entire Prince Soundtrack of Purple Rain and uh, ok any Prince song, but I had to choose something. Seemingly, the songs lyrics imply a negative energy, but there is something about Prince that is eternal youth, raw energy, and excitement. Tell me you cannot listen to 1999 or Purple Rain and not feel like singing with a broom!
- She's a Bad Mama Jama by Carl Carlton. Not the Ill-Na-Na version although it is not bad either. You have to have this song on ready in your Ipod. This song should be every chicks theme song and every guys fantasy woman. It uplifts and makes you feel good to be a woman. Which leads to....
- Any song by Shania Twain. I am not a huge fan "fan" of Shania, but every once in a while I remember she exists. When I do, her music knows how to help you remember why you liked her in the first place. It sucks that she went through a painful divorce (2010) but I am sure she will bounce back stronger and more powerful as her lyrics foretell.
- She-bop by Cindy Lauper. Yes. She-Bop. Despite its supposed meaning, there is something that is innocent about Cindy Lauper and her music during that time that was a breath of fresh air (as well as highly rated well knowns like True Colors, Time After Time, and Goonies!!! Good Enough). The innovative beat of which I am surprised has not been used for a rap song is very compelling for *ahem self love. Let's take it in its most wholesome sense.
- Higher Than This by Ledisi. Never heard of it? Me either until this past year. 2010. Ledisi is a winner and a break through person and she is what a true over-comer is all about. The song and her earthy voice talks about the Lord and tells you to believe and get "ready to be uplifted". The Lord truly is in each one of us and I hear it loud and clear in Ledisi's voice. Do your thing, sister.
- Halo by Beyonce. The powerful lyrics speak for themselves.
- Going Gets Tough by Billy Ocean. If you are under 21, you may have never heard of Billy Ocean and his velvety voice. How could he just one day stop singing and just leave us so "Suddenly"???? :-( The world was cheated of his original song. He could sing about watching paint dry and it would sound good! This song, from the soundtrack of the sequel to Romancing the Stone (remember Jewel of the Nile??) was the ONLY good thing about the movie. Remember the music video? No...?? You HAVE to do the music video dance that feature 80s dreamboat Billy, and at the timeless hunky Michael Douglas, and tough Kathleen Turner doing fun choreography. Youtube it and let your inner cheesiness out!! P.S. I forgot Danny Devito!
- Dancing Machine by the Jackson (5). Michael, Tito, Jermaine, Tito, uh Randy, Tito, Jerome?, Tito. This song is great! I miss Michael. I will leave it at that. I can listen to just about all Michael's upbeat jams and be uplifted. Period.
- Every Woman by Whitney Houston. This is the one time where the remake has its edge. Chaka is still THE diva though. Yet Whitney will always be one of the greatest treasures of all time with her powerful and far reaching voice. This song is pure power. One day she will remember this song and know truly who Whitney is.
- Staying Alive by the Bee Gees. Every time I hear this song I think of a young John Travolta strutting his stuff. It is my theme song. Speaking of Tight Jeans and tight butts....
- Turn It Up by Patti Labelle. Listen to this song when you feel like you are coming to your break through. Ms. Labelle knows how to bend a song and make it completely hers.
- Music by Madonna. Yes Madonna. Who knew? But her music despite critics is mostly timeless and out of all her songs this is a good, fun song.
- Last Night a DJ Save My Life by Mariah. Mariah?? Again?? Yes, Ms. Carey's horribly panned movie, Glitter, had some of the best 80s style and this remake was one of them.
- Magic (Hey Mama, Let's Get It Started, Imma Be) by the Black Eyed Peas. This little known song by the Peas was from the soundtrack of Legally Blonde. I am not a huge fan of the Peas, yet I must be because I always enjoy their infectious, feel good songs. Again, who knew??
- Harmony by Yorrelle. Yes, I threw myself in here, but hey its my list. :-) Check me out at http://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/yorrelle/id349886469
- Good Stuff by Kelis. Don't be mistaken, Kelis is talented and an exceptional singer. This song with the Neptunes signature sounds makes Kelis stand out from the same ol R&B.
- Closer by Ne-yo. This was a tough choice. Overall most Ne-yo songs cater to women and are very good well written songs. This song, however, really makes you want to dance.
- Livin' on the Edge by Aerosmith, We Will Rock You by Queen. No, I am not lumping two classic rock type songs together. OK, I am. But these two bands are just plain good. Some of the best harmonies and singing, which is not usually considered typical of rock music. Big drums, Big hair, Big guitar solos, and Big mouthed extremely talented singing.
- Sherry - Steve Perry. I should been gone!!! Garble Garble Garbleaway and I shoulda been gone!! He is one of the most powerful male sings of our time. His voice. His terrible clothe sense. But his voice! Wow.
- Let's Stay Together by Tina Turner and Al Green. I like both versions and on different occasions. Al Green's subtle and silky voice is gentle against your ears while Tina's version powerfully pushes you. I interpret the Lord in both songs.
